Debt Restructuring and Insolvency
Balaji’s Endless Obligation to the God of Wealth
Lord Vishnu incarnated as Srinivasa on Earth. While pursuing a wild elephant in the forests near the hills, he encountered Princess Padmavathi (an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi) and desired to marry her. King Akasa, her father, required Srinivasa to cover the wedding expenses and provide a dowry. Lacking resources, Srinivasa borrowed mountains of gold from Kubera, the God of Wealth. Kubera stipulated that Srinivasa could not return to Vaikuntha without repaying the debt. Unable to settle it, Srinivasa remains at the Tirupati temple. Hence, it is known that the devotees of Lord Balaji often offer huge amounts to help their God to repay the loan and return to Vaikuntha.
